Why ELEY Uses Powder Coat Finishes

All aluminum components on ELEY hose reels are protected with a premium powder coat finish. Unlike traditional liquid paint, powder coating is applied as a dry powder and then cured at approximately 400°F to create a hard, durable surface.

This finish helps:

  • Protect aluminum from weather exposure
  • Resist cracking, peeling, and chipping
  • Maintain an attractive appearance for years
  • Provide additional protection against corrosion

Combined with our rust-resistant aluminum construction and stainless-steel hardware, the powder coat finish helps keep your hose reel looking great season after season.

What Causes Powder Coat Paint to Peel or Bubble?

Although powder coating is extremely durable, no painted surface is immune to environmental exposure.

Paint issues such as bubbling, flaking, or peeling can occur due to:

  • Long-term UV exposure
  • Salt-air accumulation
  • Physical impacts or abrasion
  • Chemical exposure
  • Improper cleaning products
  • Damage caused by standing moisture
  • Natural aging of the coating over time

In many cases, the underlying aluminum remains fully functional and structurally sound even when cosmetic paint damage occurs.

Coastal Environments Require Additional Care

Salt air can be surprisingly aggressive toward painted metal surfaces.

Studies have shown that salt-air exposure can affect metal products located many miles inland from the shoreline. The severity depends on factors such as wind patterns, humidity, weather conditions, and local geography.

Some coastal regions may experience salt-air effects up to 50 miles inland, while particularly windy coastal areas may experience impacts much farther inland.

To help protect painted surfaces, ELEY recommends:

  • Rinsing the hose reel periodically with fresh water
  • Removing accumulated salt deposits
  • Using an ELEY Hose Reel Cover when the reel is not in use
  • Performing routine inspections of painted surfaces

These simple maintenance steps can significantly extend the life of the powder coat finish.

Powder Coat Paint Warranty Coverage

Because paint performance can be influenced by environmental conditions that are outside of ELEY’s control, the powder coat finish carries a separate warranty from the hose reel itself.

Paint Warranty

ELEY guarantees that its powder coat paint will not bubble, crack, or peel under normal use and service for one year (12 months).

Normal fading caused by long-term exposure to sunlight and UV radiation is considered a natural occurrence and is not covered under warranty. View full Warranty Policy.

Is Your Paint Issue Covered Under Warranty?

If your hose reel is within the one-year paint warranty period and you believe the finish is experiencing a warrantable defect:

  1. Take clear photos of the affected area.
  2. Submit them through the Warranty Claim Form.
  3. Our support team will review the claim and respond promptly.

Out of Warranty? Here Are Your Options

Option 1: Touch Up Small Areas

For minor chips, scratches, or small areas of peeling paint, ELEY Touch-Up Paint is often the fastest and easiest solution.

Touch-up paint works best when:

  • The damaged area is localized
  • The surrounding paint remains firmly bonded
  • Cosmetic appearance is the primary concern

Option 2: Repaint the Components

If peeling or flaking is widespread, repainting the affected aluminum components may provide the best long-term result.

Before repainting:

  • Thoroughly clean all surfaces
  • Remove loose paint
  • Lightly sand the affected areas
  • Ensure all parts are completely dry
  • Remove dust with clean, dry compressed air

If you wish to match the original ELEY finish, Spartan Bronze spray paint is available from LVP Paints. Select item PFJ507A5 Spartan Bronze from their product selection.

Important Tip

If repainting the reel flanges, leave the white axle bushings installed and simply cover them with painter’s tape before painting.

Option 3: Replace the Components

For customers who prefer a factory-finished appearance, replacement aluminum components finished in Spartan Bronze are available here: Garden Hose Reel Replacement Parts.

Note: Painted replacement parts are unavailable/discontinued for older garden hose reel models, including the Triton and Rapid Reel Pro Line.

Preventing Future Paint Problems

While no painted surface lasts forever, a few maintenance practices can help maximize the life of your powder coat finish:

  • Periodically rinse away dirt and salt deposits
  • Avoid harsh chemical cleaners
  • Use a hose reel cover during extended periods of non-use
  • Inspect painted surfaces annually
  • Address chips and scratches before they spread

Regular care can significantly extend the appearance and performance of the finish.
