Frequently Asked Questions - Polyurethane Garden Hoses

    Quick Links

    Is the garden hose drinking-water-safe?

ELEY garden hose is made from UV-stabilized FDA and NSF grade polyurethane material. Combine that with our crush-proof, lead-free machined brass fittings, and ELEY hoses are 100% drinking-water-safe. Even the rubber gaskets are made from drinking-water safe material. For more detailed information, see What You Need to Know About Drinking Water Safe Garden Hose.

    Is the garden hose kink-resistant?

ELEY polyurethane garden hose is the most kink-resistant available. Find out why our innovative hose sets the bar in kink-resistance by reading What Makes A Garden Hose Kink-Resistant?

What sizes of garden hose are available?

Currently, ELEY only produces our polyurethane garden hose with a 5/8-inch inside dimension (ID). We do not offer any other sizes, including 1/2-inch, 3/4-inch, or anything larger, nor do we have any plans to expand into these other sizes any time soon. The best method to stay informed about when we launch new products, including a 3/4-inch ID polyurethane garden hose, is to join our Email Notification list.

What lengths of garden hose are available?

ELEY 5/8-inch Polyurethane Hose is offered in standard lengths of 6-1/2 feet, 12-feet, and then in 25-foot increments from 25 feet up to 200 feet. We do not offer any lengths above 200 feet. You can also make your own custom-cut length of hose by purchasing one of our standard lengths and modifying it by using our Hose Repair Took Kit.

Does the garden hose come in different colors?

ELEY polyurethane garden hose is only available in our neutral grey color. This attractive neutral grey color was specially selected because it not only looks great on the Spartan bronze ELEY hose reels, but it also blends in well with virtually any landscape or building color.

What type of fittings can be used with the garden hose?

Eley garden hoses are made of 100% drinking-water-safe, lead-free brass, machined with the standard 3/4-inch Garden Hose Threads (GHT), which is the standard thread used throughout the USA and Canada for garden hoses. Even though the inside diameter of any brand of garden hose might be 1/2, 5/8, or 3/4-inch, the fitting on the ends will always be 3/4-inch GHT,

No Aluminum Fittings! Avoid attaching any watering tool with aluminum fittings to the ELEY garden hose due to galvanic corrosion. They will likely weld or fuse together over time and you may not be able to separate them. We recommend brass, nickel-plated, or stainless-steel fittings. Lead-free brass delivers the best results.

GHT is not NPT Please note that GHT is not compatible with NPT (National Pipe Thread), which is typically found on most steel and brass pipe fittings. So, remember, 3/4-inch GHT is not the same as 3/4-inch NPT.

Can I get the same fitting on both ends? Yes, however, it will require purchasing one of our standard lengths of hose, our fitting repair tool, and the male or female fitting you want on both ends.  The entire process is explained on our Garden Hose Fitting Repair Tool Kit page.

How much does the garden hose weigh?

Below are the Individual weights of our standard lengths. Determine the dry weight of ELEY custom-cut hose by multiplying the length by 0.14 pounds per foot.  For a water-filled hose, multiply the length by 0.27 pounds per foot.

How much pressure and flow does the garden hose deliver?

We cannot provide accurate figures regarding the flow rate (GPM) and pressure (PSI) that you'll experience at the end of your garden water hose as several factors contribute to this calculation. These include the length of hose, size of plumbing feeding your faucet, incoming pressure of your city of well supply, as well as the inside diameter of your garden water hose and watering tools. However, the inside diameter of ELEY 5/8-inch polyurethane hose is 0.625-inch (16 mm).

How flexible is the garden hose and what is the bend radius?

Unlike PVC and vinyl hoses, which can stiffen and become hard to handle in cold temperatures, ELEY polyurethane hose remains flexible down to -40°F & -40°C. The bend radius of our 5/8-inch polyurethane hose is 3-1/2 inches.  Yet, despite this flexibility, ELEY polyurethane hoses are extremely kink-resistant due to the polyurethane material's unique characteristics and the type of reinforcements we use.  Read our article, "What Makes a Garden Hose Kink Resistant?"

Can the hose be coiled onto a hose hanger, storage pot or onto the ground?

Yes.  Although the characteristics of the ELEY polyurethane water hose material is different than all other types of hoses, it can manually coiled into a circle on the ground, or into a hose storage pot, or looped onto a wall-mounted hose hanger or rack.  The key is to make sure the hose is laid out straight, with no loops in it prior to pulling it in.

How strong and durable is the garden hose?

You'll be hard-pressed to find a more durable and tear-resistant water hose. Made from the same extreme-duty material as inline roller skate wheels, the superior properties of our polyurethane material provides excellent resistance to abrasions, cuts, punctures, and tears.

What about freezing temperatures and winter storage?

ELEY polyurethane hose is extremely strong and durable. However, the water will need to be drained out of it prior to it being exposed to freezing temperatures, (32°F & 0°C). The quickest and most reliable method of draining your hose of water is the gravity-drain method.
    1. Make sure both ends of the hose are open. Unthread the female fitting from the spigot and any watering tools from the male end.
    2. Lay the hose out in a straight line, make sure there are no kinks or loops that could collapse down into a kink.
    3. Slowly start to pull the hose in (whether your coiling it into a circle on the ground, onto a hose hanger or on a reel). Make sure your hands are higher than the far end of the hose so that the water will flow downward and drain out the end of the hose. Go slowly, giving the water time to gravity drain out the hose.
Watch our Preparing Your Garden Hose Reel For Freezing Temperatures video to see a demonstration of this gravity drain method on a hose reel. Once you've got it rolled in, you're done. There will be a small remnant of water left in the hose, but not enough to damage the hose or fittings during a hard freeze. You can now leave it outside all winter if you'd like.

Can ELEY hoses be used for continuous pressure applications?

ELEY polyurethane garden hose is not recommended for any application that requires the hose to remain under constant pressure. There are hoses that are rated for continuous pressure, like washing machine hookup hoses, and must pass rigorous tests to get that rating. It is also recommended that such continuous-pressure hoses be replaced every two years.

How can I determine what length of hose I need?

Since the distance of an average person's step, walking at a normal pace is approximately three feet, a quick and simple method for calculating how much hose you need is to step off (count paces) from your faucet to the furthest distance you want the hose to reach and then multiply the total by three. This should give you a reasonable estimate of the length of hose you should purchase. For example, 30 paces x 3 feet = 90 feet. Therefore, a 100-foot length of hose would be an ideal fit for that particular location.

Does the length of hose reduce how much water I can get out of the hose?

Yes, longer lengths of hose will reduce the amount of water delivered; however, you may not notice. Most residential systems will deliver 40 to 80 pounds-per-square-inch (PSI) pressure and 6 to 12 gallons-per-minute (GPM) to the faucet. Each foot of 5/8 inch water hose added to your faucet will reduce the volume by 0.01 GPM*. This will increase the amount of time to fill a bucket or pool.
    • 50 feet of 5/8-inch hose = 0.5 GPM less volume.
    • 100 feet of 5/8-inch hose = 1 GPM less volume.
    • 200 feet of 5/8-inch hose = 2 GPM less volume.
A sprinkler or other watering tool attached to the end of the hose will affect the volume (GPM) more than the length of hose. A normal impulse sprinkler that delivers 3 GPM at the end of a 10-foot hose will continue to deliver 3 GPM at the end of a 200-foot hose. However, for every foot of 5/8-inch hose between the faucet and sprinkler, the pressure will be reduced by 0.1 PSI. This will reduce how far the sprinkler can spray.
    • 50 feet of 5/8-inch hose = 5 PSI less pressure.
    • 100 feet of 5/8-inch hose = 10 PSI less pressure.
    • 200 feet of 5/8-inch hose = 20 PSI less pressure.
*ELEY hose laid out straight on level ground with no tool on the outlet.

Can I use a standard garden hose gasket/washer from a local retail store in the female fitting on an ELEY hose?

No. A regular water hose washer from the hardware store will not work for our custom fitting. The diameter is too small for our fitting and will become off-center enough to leak. The best long-term and leak-free seal can be achieved by using the ELEY O-ring style washer that is sold as a 12-Pack, Item #1113.

What is the warranty of the ELEY polyurethane hose?

Our garden water hose is backed by an unparalleled 10-Year warranty. Regarding our hose, the warranty states:

"ELEY guarantees its polyurethane hose to be free from defect, malfunction or failure in material, or workmanship, under normal use and service, for 10 years (120 months). Discoloration or fading of the hose cover is a natural occurrence that can result from exposure to the sun's UV rays and is specifically excluded from this warranty."
