    Free-Standing Garden Hose Reel

    It's All In The Design

Kneeling_1042_Roll-upThe ELEY free-standing garden hose reel was born out of a need to provide a durable and reliable alternative to the typical and light-duty "box-style" garden hose reels that have been on the market for years. You invest a lot of time, energy, and money into your home and yard. Isn't it time to invest in the best free-standing garden hose reel available? You deserve it.

Location and installation are key factors in selecting a garden hose reel. Many don't need the portability of the larger and more expensive wheeled models, while others may not want to drill holes into the side of their house for a wall-mount reel. The ELEY free-standing garden hose reel is an excellent solution for both situations while it's low-profile makes it ideally suited for out-of-sight placement behind bushes or shrubbery.

    Common Questions

Can I put garden hose with aluminum fittings on this reel?

No.  Avoid attaching any aluminum fitting to brass when possible due to galvanic corrosion.  They will likely weld or fuse together over time and you may not be able to separate them.  We recommend brass or stainless steel fittings.  Lead-free brass (as used on ELEY Polyurethane Garden Hose) delivers the best results.

Is this product rated as "Drinking Water Safe?

Yes.  The entire plumbing of the hose reel consists of just two components, 1) the inlet hose, and 2) the brass-aluminum-stainless steel swivel. The inlet hose is made of 100% virgin polyurethane approved for food contact and does not contain lead, phthalates, or BPA (bisphenol A).  The fittings are made from lead-free brass, as is the brass in the swivel.

What is the bend radius (diameter) of the center drum?

The diameter of the center drum of the hose reel, which will be the smallest bend radius of your hose wrap, is 6-inches.

Can I get a different length of inlet hose?  What about 3/4" inlet hose?

All Eley garden hose reels are prepackaged with a 6-1/2 ft. x 5/8" ID polyurethane inlet hose, (also called a feeder, jumper, or supply hose).  We are not able to substitute it for a different size or length of hose.  If you'd prefer an inlet hose that is shorter, longer, or larger (i.e. 3/4" ID), then you'll need to acquire it separately. Here are a few options available to you:

    • We offer two longer assemblies of 5/8" polyurethane hose on this website, a 12 ft. x 5/8" ID hose, and a 25 ft. x 5/8" ID hose
    • You can make your own inlet hose from an old hose you already have in your possession.
    • You can purchase a different length and/or size of hose (including 3/4" ID) from a different source or retailer. Eley does not offer 3/4" ID hose at this time.

The end of the inlet hose that attaches to the hose reel will simply need to be equipped with a standard, male 3/4" GHT fitting, (Garden Hose Thread).  Standard 3/4" NPT (National Pipe Thread), will not work.

I see two types of brass swivels in product photos.  Which will come with my hose reel?

All hose reels now come equipped with our newest goose-neck brass & copper swivel design.  This new design eliminates the need for the internal kink-free spring that was used on earlier models to prevent kinks while forming the loop in the garden hose...which is now created by the goose-neck design. Any water restriction that may have been created by the internal spring is also eliminated, allowing for better water flow.  If you currently own the previous design and would like to upgrade your hose reel to the new design, simply purchase our Goose-Neck Swivel. You can then remove the kink-free spring from your garden hose.

Is the hose reel easily tipped over?

No, our free-standing hose reel will not easily tip over. It has a wide base with rubber feet to help keep it stable and weighs 23 lbs. For added stability, the hose reel can be staked to the ground or anchored to a solid surface.

Are the reels available in different colors?

Eley garden hose reels are only available in our "Spartan bronze" color. This attractive, neutral bronze color was selected for its unique ability to blend in and look great with almost any color of siding, brick, stucco, wood, and other surfaces.

When is the Extra-Capacity Kit necessary?

The maximum hose capacity of the 'standard-capacity' hose reel is 125 feet of 5/8" ID hose or 100 feet of 3/4" ID hose. If your hose length exceeds this limit, you will need to upgrade the hose reel with the Extra-Capacity Kit. (See image below). The maximum hose length that can be stored on an Extra-Capacity hose reel is 200 feet of 5/8" ID hose or 170 feet of 3/4" ID hose.

    Is any assembly required?

Yes. However, the assembly process is not difficult. The assembly instruction manuals can be view on our Owner's Manual page.

    See More Common Questions

Do you make larger capacities reels?

The largest capacity hose reel available from Eley is any of our standard models modified with our Extra-Capacity Kit. Equipped with this optional kit, our reels can hold up to 200 feet of 5/8" hose or 170 feet of 3/4" hose.

Can the reel be converted to 3/4 flow?

Yes. The entire internal plumbing of all Eley garden hose reels consists of two components, 1) the inlet hose and 2) the brass swivel. The standard inlet hose that is supplied with each reel is 5/8" ID. However, our patented brass swivel is a full-flow 3/4" swivel. So to convert the reel to 3/4" flow, simply replace the 5/8" inlet hose with a 3/4" inlet hose of your choosing, (sold separately). Eley offers two 3/4" inlet hoses in lengths of 6-1/2 and 12 ft. on our Inlet Hose page.

Can I use thread locking compound on the stainless steel screws during assembly?

ELEY does not advise using a thread locking compound, whether it be low, medium or high strength. The reason is; if removal is required at a later time, there are a number of places where you are not able to access both the nut and the screw to hold them properly if a thread locker has been used.

Can the 1042 Free Standing hose reel be anchored to a solid surface?

Yes,  The rubber feet on the base of the 1042 Free Standing Garden Hose Reel have ¼” open rivet holes that can be utilized for anchoring the reel to a solid surface.  You will want to select the proper hardware for your mounting application from your local hardware store.

Does the 1042 tip-over or slide on mulch, rock, gravel?

The 1042 Free Standing Garden Hose Reel may slide or move if sitting on a loose impediment as the rubber feet need to contact a solid surface in order to hold it in place.  If you wish to anchor the reel to the ground you can use up to a ¼” landscape spike through the open rivet holes in the feet.  Or, you might consider putting the reel a solid surface like a paver at least 20” wide.

Can I mount it to a trailer?

No, the Eley garden hose reels are not intended for over-the-road applications. The warranty of the product does not apply when products are used in excess of their rated capacities and design functions or under abnormal conditions.

I don't see my question in this list.
