Are replacement O-rings available? What size are they?
Yes. A quick connect repair and maintenance kit is available, which contains ten O-rings and a tube of ELEY Silicone Grease, which is designed explicitly for our O-ring material. The Part number for this kit is Item #1185. If you want to try and find an O-ring locally, note that it is a metric O-ring. An inch O-ring will not work. The dimensions and tolerances of all the pieces must work together or, the assemblies will not work properly. The O-Ring is a 21 x 2 which is the ID and width. That makes the OD 25mm. Materials are important also. We use a drinking water safe EPDM. Periodically applying a thin coating of this 100% silicone grease to the O-rings will extend their life and improve performance.
Are the O-rings pre-lubed with silicone grease, or should it be applied before first use?
We recommend applying a thin layer of 100% silicone grease to the O-rings before first use. You don't need to remove them from the plug to do this; simply apply the grease to the installed O-ring. If you need to order silicone grease, we sell it along with a 10-pack of replacement O-rings with our item #1185 Quick-Connect Repair & Maintenance Kit.
Does the socket stop the water flow when I remove the plug from it?
No. The plug cannot be removed while under pressure. The water pressure must be first turned off before the quick-connect set can be separated. There are two methods of doing this. First, by shutting the water off back at the faucet/water source. The second method is to install a ball valve directly before the socket. (See photo) This will allow you to shut the water off right at the quick-connect set, without having to return to the faucet/water source. Eley offers two garden hose ball valves that work perfectly for this application, our straight Garden Hose Ball Valve and our Swivel Garden Hose Ball Valve.
Can I leave the quick-connect socket & plug outside during freezing temperatures?
Both quick-connect pieces (the socket and plug) are "pass-through" items, which means they will not "hold" any water by themselves and are, therefore, not susceptible to freeze damage by themselves. (See photo) Just make sure they are not connected to each other in a closed system that is full of water.
The socket can remain attached to the socket and the plug attached to the hose as long as they are disconnected from each other. Water should be drained from all hoses and watering tools prior to the onset of freezing temperatures, to prevent freeze damage, as our warranty does not cover freeze damage.
How will these "perform" with flowing water in freezing temperatures?
You'll likely have some difficulty. Even with water flowing in freezing environments, it doesn't take much moisture to cause the brass parts to stick together. In particular, it may be challenging to get the sleeve on the socket to slide to disengage the plug. The quick-connect sets were designed to operate in above-freezing conditions.
Is this item drinking water safe?

Are they compatible with other brands of quick connectors?

What maintenance is required?
Depending on the frequency of use, the O-rings on the plugs should periodically be coated with a thin layer of Silicone Grease. This will not only improve the performance of the quick-connect set but also increase the life of the O-rings.
Are protective caps available to cover the quick-connect parts when not in use?
ELEY does not offer any protective caps at this time. We found these Sure-Grip protective caps from McMaster-Carr. However, they are NOT drinking water safe. We're sharing them to give you an idea of what might work.
We tested them, and they fit very well. They come in a 10-pack and, as of April 2024, are about $10 per pack. Follow these links to purchase these caps from McMaster.com.
