How to Prepare Your Hose Reel for Freezing Temperatures

If your hose reel, garden hose and watering tools are going to be exposed to freezing temperatures (below 32°F) is very important that you steps to protect your outdoor watering products from freeze damage. Please see our article and video on Preparing Your Hose Reel for Freezing Temperatures.

Hose Reel is Leaking

If your ELEY or Rapid Reel garden hose reel has developed a leak, please watch this short video to help you determine the exact source of the leak. The entire plumbing of all Eley and Rapid Reel garden hose reels consist of just two components and this video will help you quickly determine which is the source of the leak. After watching this video, most leaks can be remedied without the need for replacement parts. However, if your leak is due to a failed component, you can either:

1) Order the appropriate Replacement Part from this website. (Out of warranty)

2) Request a replacement component with our online Warranty Claim Form. (Still under Warranty)

A Part or Component Broke

If you believe the failure is under warranty, please take a picture of the failed component and submit it using our Warranty Claim Form. Someone from our Customer Support Team will promptly reply to your request.

If it is not under warranty, new replacement parts can be purchased by visiting our Garden Hose Reel Replacement Parts.

Faded, Cracked or Peeling Paint

Our warranty policy states that ELEY "...guarantees its powder coat paint will not bubble, crack or peel under normal use and service, for a period of 1 year (12 months). Fading of the paint is a natural occurrence due to the sun's UV rays and is specifically excluded from this warranty." View full Warranty Policy.

Out of Warranty- If the affected area is out of warranty and small enough, our fingernail polish-sized bottle of ELEY Touch-Up Paint might be a quick remedy. However, if the size of flaking or peeling is too large for touching up, then you might consider repainting all of the aluminum components in any color of your choosing. Bob Vila provides a good article regarding this called How To Paint Aluminum. If you'd like to stay with our Spartan bronze color, you can purchase a 12 oz can of spray paint from LVP Paints. Be sure to select item PFJ507A5 Spartan Bronze from the drop-down menu on their product page.

It is recommended that you do not remove the white axle bushing if you're repainting one or both of the reel flanges. You can cover the bushings with painter's tape.
Please be sure the parts are clean and dry. Sanding the surface first will help. Cleaning with dry compressed air should help. (Blow compressed air on a clean white piece of paper first to make sure no moisture or oil is in the air)

The hose reel tips over too easy

Usually this is caused by the cam-lever brake being set too tight. Please watch this video on how to properly adjust and use the cam-lever brake.

A foot-pad has come off the front bumper of my cart.

If you still have the foot pad with the screw and nut intact, the process of reattaching it to the front bumper is easy and can be done in less than one minute. We have a short how-to video demonstrating the procedure. The foot pads are also available for purchase to replace lost ones. The rubber grips keep sliding off the push-pull handles on my cart/wagon hose reel?

Spray some hairspray on both the aluminum handle and inside of the grip before sliding it back onto the aluminum handle. Wait 24 hours and it shouldn’t happen again. This is how they deal with this issue with Motocross and BMX bikes.

Can I return unused components for credit?

Hose reel components that are not used in your particular application, (i.e. inlet hose, cart bumper, etc.), cannot be returned for credit or exchanges.

I Need a different length (or size) of inlet hose

All ELEY and Rapid-Reel garden hose reels came prepackaged with a 6-1/2 foot x 5/8-inch garden hose. For other inlet hose options, please see our article: Inlet Hoses - Everything You Need To Know.

Can I convert my hose reel to a different model?

Yes you can. However, depending on what type of conversion you're wanting to make, it may not make sense for the money spent.

Wall-Mount to Free-Standing and vice versa. This is the easiest and least expensive conversion to make. The only difference between these two models is the wall-plate and the base-plate. So if you want to convert your Model 1041 wall-mount hose reel into a Model 1042 free-standing hose reel, then purchase the #2903 Base Plate. If you want to convert a Model 1042 into a Model 1041, purchase the #2558 Wall Plate.

Wall or Free-Standing to a Portable Wheeled Hose Reel. Although you could purchase the 20+ components required to convert a Model 1041 wall-mount or a Model 1042 free-standing reel into a 2-wheel or 4-wheel portable hose reel, the total cost of all those components will be more than the price of a brand new Model 1043 Two-Wheel Cart Hose Reel or a Model 1043Q Four-Wheel Wagon Hose Reel.

Can I upgrade my older hose reel with new and improved component designs?

Goose-neck Swivel: In May 2017 ELEY introduced a new brass swivel design that incorporated a goose-neck design. This redesign eliminated the need for the stainless-steel "kink-free" spring that could cause some flow restriction. You can purchase our new swivel, Item #4255 to upgrade your hose reel. This upgrade is not covered by our warranty as it is an upgrade, not a defect.

Hose Strap - If the front flange on your hose reel has a square hole as shown in this photo, then your reel can accommodate our most recent hose strap design. You can purchase our #4114 Hose Strap Assembly on this website and retrofit it onto your hose reel.

Polyurethane Garden Hose

The female fitting on my hose is leaking

The first thing to do is to replace the garden hose gasket (or O-ring) to see if that doesn't stop the leak. If your fitting has a flat washer gasket, we recommend replacing it with our Item #4239 O-ring Gasket which provides a much better seal. If the #4239 O-ring gasket still doesn't stop the leak, then please Contact Us.

Does ELEY make retrofit repair fittings for the hose ends?

Yes, we do, for 5/8-inch garden hoses only. Our proprietary designed repair tool and fittings will provide you with a factory-grade crimping. You can buy the repair tool once and then have it for repairing many brands of 5/8-inch garden hose with premium quality, drinking-water-safe, lead-free brass fittings. Discoloration or fading of hose

Discoloration of the hose is typically caused by exposure to the sun's UV rays. The only reliable method of preventing this from occurring is to keep the UV rays off of the hose, either by keeping the garden hose indoors or under some type of covering. Unfortunately, this is not a condition covered by our Warranty Policy which states,

"Discoloration or fading of the hose cover is a natural occurrence that can result from exposure to the sun's UV rays and is specifically excluded from this warranty."

A fitting on my polyurethane hose has come apart.

If your hose is less than 10 years old, please take a picture of the failure and send it to use using our Warranty Claim Form. If it is over 10 years old it is now out of warranty, however, the end could be replaced with an aftermarket repair fitting. There are a number of options available to you at local home centers, garden centers, farm stores, or hardware stores. We recommend you purchase one made of brass. Also, be sure it is for 3/4-inch garden hose threads (GHT) and has a 5/8-inch hose barb. If you find it difficult to push the barb into the hose, try applying a drop of dish soap to the barb.

The polyurethane hose cover has failed or has a bubble.

If your hose is less than 10 years old, please take a picture of the failure and send it to use using our Warranty Claim Form.

If it is over 10 years old it is now out of warranty, however, it should be able to be repaired with an aftermarket connector fitting by cutting out the damaged area and splicing the two parts together. These hose mender parts should be available at local home centers, garden centers, farm stores, or hardware stores. Be sure the dual-barb adapter is made of brass and is for 5/8-inch inside diameter hose. If you find it difficult to push the barbs into the hose, try applying a drop of dish soap to the barb.

Watering Tools and Accessories

Valve lever is too difficult to move.

If the item is less than 10 years old, please let us know by submitting our Warranty Claim Form. If it is over 10 years old, unfortunately it is now out of warranty.

Valve won't shut off water when closed.

I'm struggling to get the hose cover on the reel.

Reel cover is fading or discoloring

Discoloration is typically caused by exposure to the sun's UV rays. The only reliable method of preventing this from occurring is to keep the UV rays off of the product either by keeping the item indoors or under some type of covering. Unfortunately, this is not a condition covered by our Warranty Policy which states,

"The fading or discoloration of products from the sun's UV rays are specifically excluded from this warranty."

Is the on/off U-shaped lever replaceable if it happens to break?

If the item is less than 10 years old and you believe the failure was not due to being used in excess of normal use and service, or in excess of its rated capacities and design functions, or under abnormal conditions, then please take a picture of the failure and send it to use using our Warranty Claim Form.

Discontinued Products

Pressure Washer Hose Reels

ELEY discontinued the industrial line of pressure washer hose reels in 2017. All of these models are now out of warranty. Crank handle and high-pressure swivels are still available as well as many other components. For more details and purchasing of replacement parts, shop Pressure Washer Hose Reel Parts.

Air Hose Reels

Rapid-Reel air hose reels were discontinued in 2005. The triangular-base crank handle is the only part still available. If you're wanting O-rings to rebuild the brass swivel, or to buy the crank handle, shop Air Hose Reel Parts.

Rapid-Reel TRITON Garden Hose Reels

The Rapid-Reel TRITON line of garden hose reels were sold from 2006 to 2009. These models are now out of warranty, although many replacement parts are still available. For price and availability of parts, shop TRITON Hose Reel Parts.

Rapid-Reel PRO-LINE Garden Hose Reels
